You should compare choosing self-defense classes to buying a car and while this may sound strange, it really is not. When you purchase a car, you look at several things. For example, how long will the car potentially last, the costs and expenses of the car, maintenance, and even the overall satisfaction of other customers. Most car buyers will also look at the safety rating of the vehicle as well before making a final decision. As a person, looking for self-defense classes you should do much the same research. After all, you are talking about your physical safety and need all of the help you can get.
You should first ask around to your friends and see if someone can recommend a great self-defense class to you. Many people can give you referrals and take the bad referrals as just as valuable as the good ones. While the good referrals will point you in the direction of a place to look into further, a bad referral will help you establish early on who or what class to skip right over. This can be a huge time saver, as well as save the stress and headache of a poor class. Your next step should be doing some research to determine if self-defense classes in your area are required to be taught by someone who has a specific certification or license that helps establish their credentials. If anyone is allowed to teach the classes then you know that you will need to look closer at individual credentials, however if there are strict guidelines and requirements then looking at each individual is not usually as difficult. You can also consider stopping at your local police department. Most departments sponsor self-defense classes or at the very least know where appropriate classes are being conducted. The police department should be able to help direct you towards a self –defense class that is appropriate for your individual needs. After all, if you are an older adult a kick boxing self-defense class may not be the wisest option. If you are having a great deal of trouble locating an appropriate class you can also break out your local phone book and search for different fitness centers and self-defense centers in your area. Many abuse centers and battered women shelters will also offer classes. However, not all classes are open to the public so check with the center first. If you suspect that you have found an appropriate class but are not positive, go and watch a class in action. Watch the exact instructor that you are considering. If you do not feel comfortable with the instructor simply watching them then chances are you will not be happy with the class. You want to make sure that you feel that you can excel in the class or else you are not likely to make significant progress. As you consider the final step to decide on a great self-defense class you should always talk to the instructor. This gives you a bit of one on one time with the instructor to ask any specific questions that you may have and also cover what expectations the instructor expects from students. For example, some classes are intermediate level and expect students to have a basic knowledge of certain skills before taking the class. Remember, never sign up for a class that you do not feel completely comfortable with. You should always look for the best class that is available with an instructor that is warm and inviting so that you are free to ask questions and make mistakes. Your safety is worth the time and effort to find your perfect class, so enjoy the time you spend looking around at classes. |
