You don't have to be James Bond to be placed under surveillance. If you run a successful business your competitors or even your suppliers may want to keep an eye on you. If you have been targeted for identity theft, or just had a fight with someone who may want revenge, or even live in a city where celebrities are filming a movie, you may begin to suspect that you are under surveillance. More and more regular people are finding this to be the case. Counter surveillance is no longer just for spies and the paranoid.
When many people think about counter surveillance they think about sophisticated electronic equipment straight out of a movie. In fact, counter surveillance equipment is sophisticated and readily available for the ordinary citizen. However, the most common surveillance technique involves having one person, or a group of persons, follow the person of interest. The most effective counter surveillance techniques against this type of surveillance can be your own eyes! Be on the lookout for new faces that appear around you, and stick with you when you move. If you make a sudden disturbance, most people will turn and look at you. If someone turns away suddenly, that is an indicator that they may not want to be recognized.
Keep in mind that there may be surveillance situations where the person following you may actually want you to know that you are being followed. These situations may be more about intimidation than surveillance. Obviously there are a lot of products available for electronic counter surveillance. There are different categories of equipment, and most of these electronic gadgets fit into one of these categories. Categories themselves are divided first into listening and watching. Consider what you think of when you hear the word surveillance-someone watching and taking photos, or someone listening in.
Let's examine listening devices first. They tend to require more electronics, which can make them easier to detect. Telephone wiretaps can be located at the phone itself, at a common junction box in a home or office, on any wire between the phone, the junction box, and the telephone pole. In fact, more sophisticated (government) surveillance may actually place a wiretap on the pole to minimize the likelihood of detection. Another form of listening device is the bug. This device is will capture conversations that don't happen over a telephone. Most of these devices are self-powered and transmit via radio to a remote station.
Both bugs and phone taps require some physical access to put them in place. Have you had an unexpected home inspection recently? Another form of listening device is the long distance microphone that can be aimed at a table or a car. Noise generators are effective counter measures for listening devices of all types. Photographic or video surveillance can be harder to detect, because these devices typically do not transmit photos or videos in real time via radio the way listening devices do. Almost every cell phone today has a camera, so the equipment is ubiquitous. If you think you may be under surveillance, counter surveillance training is your best ally. Learn as much as you can to defend your privacy.
