The idea of being a private investigator is very appealing to many individuals, and a concept that should be pursued if that is truly where your talents and interests lie. You also have to obtain a degree in the area of criminal law or criminal justice.

After you have verified you have completed at least 6,000 hours of work in the area of investigating you can pursue taking the written exam. Those hours can be accumulated by working in the areas of law enforcement, collection agencies, insurance companies, banking, the courts, or working under other private investigators.

Most private investigators start out working for an agency after obtaining their licensing. This allows them to build up a solid reputation in the field. Over time many private investigators branch out into their own private business. They can keep busy with the steady flow of new customers recommended to them by past people that have been happy with the work the private investigator completed for them.

There are also some specific requirements that may have to be met depending on the state in which you plan to hold your private investigators license in. It is a good idea to contact the proper licensing agency in your area. This way you can be sure you complete all the requirements you need and there won't be any disappointing surprises. If you plan to work in multiple states you may need to take a look at the various requirements of this as well. Many private investigators find themselves traveling often to complete the assignments they have committed themselves to.
