Identity theft involves taking someone else's personal information and using it for personal gain. The epidemic of identity theft is widespread and one that all of us can easily fall victim to. Many people don't report issues with identity theft because they are embarrassed. More organizations are stepping in and helping such people out because unraveling the mess associated with identity theft is quite time consuming and complicated. Identity theft is a type of crime that involves deceiving someone else to use their personal information and accounts for uses that they did not authorize. The laws are only beginning to get tougher on those caught up in identity theft scams, but most of the people involved are never caught. They operate quickly and have wiped out accounts before anyone even knows that there was a problem going on. The world of electronic transfers makes it easier to access such accounts online. With someone else's social security number it is possible to get credit in their name including credit cards, vehicles, and even a mortgage. With credit card information large purchases can be racked up. Of course with checking and savings account information those accounts can be wiped clean in just a matter of minutes. One other area of identity theft that occurs is using the person's social security number for work. This can cause problems for the individual with the IRS or their own employer. If the person using that identity obtains a photo ID and commits a crime it can cause you to have problems securing a job due to a background check coming back with false information that is connected to you. It is very important that everyone does their part to prevent identity theft from happening. This involves protecting your personal information and closely monitoring all of your accounts on a regular basis. Should you become a victim of identity theft you need to report it to your creditors and to law enforcement immediately. |
