Why ‘Free Public Records’ Are Not For Free |
|

Many individuals that search for public records online have found that they are required to pay a fee to view free public records. How are these companies on the internet getting away with charging individuals for the ability to view records that are supposed to be free?
The reason that the companies can get away with charging these fees is that free public records are indeed free to view, but only if you leave your home to go to the courthouse, research how to find the information that you need, and view the information while still at the courthouse. Any website that provides an individual with access to the free public records have the option of charging these individuals a fee for providing them with all the tools that they need to find the record that they are looking for.
Even though the public records themselves are free, the company that is providing access and search tools for those records has to expend money maintaining the website, paying for web hosting, maintaining employees, and numerous other expenditures that are needed to keep the website running and the information updated on a regular basis. It is these items that the fees charged for viewing the free public record are going toward paying for.
