Using a people background check to view an individual's previous history is becoming more commonplace as time goes on. Twenty years ago, performing a background check was virtually unheard of and was typically only used for individuals that were applying for highly sensitive employment positions.

The information that is disclosed during a people background check is limited to only those items that an individual has been convicted of. If the individual has not obtained a conviction from a court of law, the event will not be included for review on the individual's background check. It is unlawful to include items that the individual has been on trial for or has been accused of but not convicted of under the premise that all individuals are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Many individuals choose to conduct a people background check on themselves using an online website that provides free background checks in order to see what potential employers may see on their reports. In some cases, individuals have found that they have items on their criminal records that they are not responsible for because someone has stolen their identity and committed a crime using their name. It can be very difficult to correct these types of mistakes.
