While most businesses out there are legitimate and in business to build a quality relationship with the customers they serve, there are also a handful of them that are run by scam artists who will take your money and run. It can be hard to differentiate between the two types of businesses. Consumers have a right to be nervous when it comes to dealing with a business they haven't worked with before. It is possible to conduct a business background check so you will know exactly who you are working with.By conducting a business background check you can make sure the company has a solid reputation and the proper licensing to meet the local, state, and Federal requirements for their line of work. You also want to find out the financial security of the company. Don't invest your money with them and then find out they are in trouble with creditors or that they have filed for bankruptcy. It is also a good idea to check for any civil actions against the company. Since this type of information is public record you can look it up either online or by contacting the courts that cover the location where the business is located. Look for lawsuits, liens including those involving taxes, judgments, and filings for bankruptcy. You may have to look at the Federal court system as well to find some of these types of transactions that may have occurred or be under way. If the company is local you can take advantage of the resources in your community to find this type of information. Your local Chamber of Commerce and Better Business Bureau can help you to identify any red flags waving out there in the wind. Take a very careful look about any complaints other consumers have filed against the company. Look for patterns of behavior that could cause programs for you should you choose to work with them. If the company is not local you can use the internet to find out the contact information for their local resources. You can also check with the Better Business Bureau online. Most companies have an Employee Identification Number. You can ask the company for it and do a thorough check with this information as well. That will tell you if the business has changed names. If they have, investigate all the information under each name you find. Don't be afraid to ask the company for references and then take the time to check them out. If this is a company that is going to be performing work for you such as remodeling or interior design you want to make sure you are aware of the quality of work they have performed for other people. If the company is owned by one or two people take the time to conduct a background check on each person. Criminal history records are public record so you are able to access this information legally even though they aren't operating the business under their individual names. If you plan to invest a large amount of money in a company then you wan to find out about their financial situation. You can ask for a business credit report that will provide you with information on their assets and liabilities. A business credit report can legally be obtained by any other company who wants to make sure it is in strong financial shape before committing to working with it. It is important for individuals to protect themselves as well as large companies. There is plenty of fraud out there in the business work on a small scale and also involving millions of dollars. Taking the time to conduct a business background check can help ensure you don't fall victim to such scams. It is reassuring to know you are working with a legitimate business for all of your dealings. |
