Teacher Background Check
Several years ago in an upstate New York school district, the Schools Superintendent, the man ultimately responsible for the welfare of thousands of children while they were in the district's educational facilities, was convicted of sexually abusing a young man from a local middle school. The media then discovered that this man had been subject to similar charges in the past, while employed by another state's school system. Parents were enraged when the New York school district admitted that no background checks had been made before this man was hired for such a responsible and sensitive job. Many members of the school district lost their jobs as a result of this oversight and a number of lawsuits brought by angry parents are in progress.

Many school districts these days are not so short sighted, and do make a practice of running some kind of background checks on member of their schools' staff. However, there are very few legal regulations that require this important step to be taken, something that many parents groups and politicians believe should be changed, and still some of these checks are inadequate in many people's eyes.

It is really not possible for parents to watch over their children every hour of the day. Every state in the Union requires that children of certain ages attend school on a regular basis, and in many cases, their parents may be subject to criminal charges if they do not. Therefore it is crucial that people who are working with children for many hours of the day, are good upstanding and trustworthy. A simple resume review is far from sufficient, and a quick check of local legal records will not reveal any criminal activity or professional discipline actions that may have gone on in other states (as had in the New York case.)

In addition to the safety considerations, teacher's educational and professional credentials should be thoroughly investigated as well. These are people being entrusted with imparting knowledge that should help children progress through life, and providing essential skills for the future. If a candidate has inflated or even outright falsified their educational or professional background in order to obtain a teaching position, the school board will be doing students a very damaging disservice by employing them.

There are those who claim that conducting pre employment background checks like this violates the civil rights of the teaching candidate in some way. However a person, who is hoping to work with those most vulnerable in society, children, should not take it as an invasion of their privacy. If a teacher has had a few speeding tickets it really will not be held against them (unless they are hoping to teach Driver's Ed perhaps.) Parents however do have the right to expect that the people entrusted with the care and education of their children be safe and qualified to do so.
