National Criminal Background Checks
There have been many times when an individual may have heard the phrase 'national criminal background checks' used to describe the type of background check that is desired on an individual. Many individuals believe that if background checks are preformed on an individual, they are always national criminal background checks and that conducting those checks is as easy as typing in an individual's name and date of birth.

The truth is that the background checks that are normally performed on an individual are local or county background checks and are performed using the resources of local or county agencies. Conducting a national criminal background check is very difficult for individuals that are not part of the federal government as most individuals are not allowed access to the information that they would need to make such a background check possible.

Having national criminal background checks conducted on individuals can be very expensive, which is why many companies choose not to conduct national criminal background checks on their potential employees. There are several reasons why conducting this type of background check is so expensive.

One of the reasons why conducting national criminal background checks are so expensive is that there is not a single database that contains all of the criminal records for every individual convicted of every crime that includes every area of the United States. There are a number of smaller local governments that do not yet have the ability to create electronic copies of their records, much less allow the average individual access to those records.

This means that in order for national criminal background checks to be conducted, the individual that is searching for the information would have to search the criminal records of each place that the individual has been known to live or is believed to have lived to see whether or not the individual committed any crimes within that jurisdiction. This method takes a great deal of time and does not always provide accurate information about the individual that is being searched.

Another reason that national criminal background checks are so difficult to conduct is that many state and federal record keeping agencies restrict access to the information that is held in their records to individuals that actually have a need to use that information. Information about an individual that is held at the state or federal level is often unable to be accessed by individuals that are not a part of the government or have special clearance to view the records that they hold.
